Grade 6 Weekly News

December 14, 2010

It was great to see so many of you at the Shul-in this past weekend! I hope you had as much fun as I did. Be sure to read our weekly newsletter and class blog Challenge Day
Since this Tuesday was a Challenge Day, we focused mainly on Hebrew as the students had a chance to show their mastery of the Closing Haftarah Blessing. We were able to really nit-pick to ensure that each student had every word and note just right!

HOMEWORK:
Each week, students must practice reading Hebrew at least 5 minutes every night. Each student must complete and turn in a Reading Raffle Card to prove that they completed their Hebrew practice. This week, there are two choices for assignments:

• Students who did not successfully complete the Closing Haftarah Blessing Challenge must master the chanting of the blessing this week and pass the challenge at our next class.

OR

• Students who have passed the challenge should get a head start on the next prayer on our B’nei Mitzvah Checklist – Ein Kamocha. It can be found on page 244 in their blue folders (there is also a link to the siddur page on our class blog, both a student version and a “Heblish” version so that parents who can’t read Hebrew can help their child practice). The prayer is comprised of 8 lines of Hebrew directly below the words “The Ark is opened. Remove the Torah.” For homework, practice reading the 8 lines of Hebrew in Ein Kamocha.

As always, students should also sing through what we know of the Trope Anthem a few times each day. A copy of the colorful Trope Anthem can be found in the blue folder as well (and on our class blog you can find a copy of the Trope Anthem AND a link to hear it chanted!).

REMINDERS:

• Join us at this Friday’s Judaism in Motion Shabbat service with the amazing TOS band!
• The TOS toy drive is coming to an end on December 17. Please bring a new unwrapped toy to place in one of the cribs set up around the synagogue.
• If you need to contact me with any questions or concerns, please send a message to my new email address: monge.kate@gmail.com.

Jewish Studies
To get ready for next week’s Hebrew Challenge Day, we spent only a portion of our first hour on Jewish Studies so that we could devote extra time to Hebrew. We reviewed all of the Jewish values we have covered so far this year, as well as the Jewish heroes with which the concepts were paired. We also started our brainstorming for the annual Grade 6 super secret prank that will take place during this week’s shul-in…shhh!

HOMEWORK:
No Jewish Studies homework this week! Students should instead practice extra hard for next week’s Hebrew Challenge Day!

Hebrew – B’nei Mitzvah Skills
This week, we spent extra Hebrew time focusing on the tune of the peppy Blessing After the Haftarah. Next week (December 14) is our next CHALLENGE DAY! Our goal is to have every student master BOTH Haftarah blessings before we break for Winter Vacation! As promised, a special treat awaits the class if everyone completes the challenge next week. Be sure to practice extra hard!

HOMEWORK:
Each week, students must practice reading Hebrew at least 5 minutes every night. Each student must complete and turn in a Reading Raffle Card to prove that they completed their Hebrew practice. This week, there are again TWO assignments:

Jewish Studies

This week, students learned about the Jewish value of Kol Yisrael aravim zeh ba-zeh (All Jews are responsible for one another) and that all Jews are connected. Religion is not the only Jewish connection, there is also a peoplehood connection. Students also studied about Bob and Myra Kraft, examples of local philanthropists who devote their lives to giving to many causes, including a high proportion of Jewish ones.

HOMEWORK – due Tuesday, December 7

Complete the worksheet on the reverse of the hardcopy newsletter. If you misplaced this week's newsletter, here are the questions:

A Hasidic rabbi taught, the many letters in the Torah represent the many souls of the Jewish people. If one single letter is left out of the Torah, it is unfit for use. If one single soul is left out of the union of the Jewish people, the Divine Presence will not join them. Like the letters, the souls must join together. ~Rabbi Uri of Streslik

1. What is your connection to the Jewish people?

2. What is missing from the Jewish people if you are not there?

Hebrew – B’nei Mitzvah Skills

This week, we continued learning to chant the Blessing After the Haftarah. Our goal is to have every student master the lengthy blessing before we break for Winter Vacation!

Jewish Studies

This week, we focused on the Jewish care value of Zikaron (“memory”). Abraham Joshua Heschel teaches us that “Judaism is a religion of time, aiming at the sanctification of time.” The way to make a moment holy is to infuse it with memory and context. In this chapter, we study the Shabbat Kiddush in order to understand this symbolic notion of remembering. While there is a tendency to connect zikaron to death and memory of those who died, it is also the heart of the way we celebrate holidays and other moments.

We introduced the topic of the Holocaust this week as we learned about our Zikaron hero, Elie Wiesel, and the significance of his recounting and applying the lessons of the Holocaust. We also learned about Dov Noy, a man whose job it was to collect Jewish memories in the form of folktales to preserve what Jews knew.

HOMEWORK (due Tuesday, November 23):

Complete the worksheet on the reverse of this week's newsletter that went home on Tuesday. If you misplaced your newsletter, here was the assignment:

Ask a parent to tell you a family story that s/he hopes you will always remember. Share this precious family story on the lines below to help us reinforce the importance of zikaron, memory.

Hebrew – B’nei Mitzvah Skills

This week, we continued our study of the Blessing After the Haftarah. Students worked on perfecting the Hebrew text of this lengthy blessing. Next week, we’ll begin chanting the blessing. Our goal is to have every student master the upbeat tune before we break for Winter Vacation!

HOMEWORK:

Each week, students must practice reading Hebrew at least 5 minutes every night. Each student must complete and turn in a Reading Raffle Card to prove that they completed their Hebrew practice. This week, there are again TWO assignments:

JEWISH STUDIES

This week, we focused on the Jewish value of Rodef Shalom (“chasing/pursuing peace” or “a chaser of peace”). We learned that there is a distinction between Oseh Shalom (a maker of peace) and Rodef Shalom (a seeker of peace). A Rodef Shalom acts aggressively to create opportunities for peace. Peace doesn’t just happen, it must be pursued. Our Jewish hero of the week is Nobel Peace Prize winner Yitzhak Rabin, who began the peace process with the Palestinians. He gave his life trying to solve the conflict in the Middle East. Click here to read this week's chapter (it begins on page 23).

Jewish Studies

This week, we focused on the Jewish value of S’mirat ha-Guf (“guarding the body”). Jewish law requires us to treat our bodies as holy places since it is believed that the body belongs to God and we are created in God’s image. We learned about the Maccabiah games and one of this week’s Jewish Heroes, Yosef Yekutieli (the mastermind of the competition). We also ready about Olympic swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg and the work he has done to perform mitzvot outside both in and out of the pool.

HOMEWORK (due Tuesday, October 26):

Create a poster/flyer for the Maccabiah Games like the one used to market the event to the Jewish community in the early 1930s (page 19). Your creation can be the size of a regular piece of paper. We’ll be hanging these posters up in our classroom so be sure to do your best and be creative. The Maccabiah is the Jewish Olympics. It takes place in Israel the year after the Olympic Games. It is one of the five largest sporting events in the world. Be sure to include information we read on page 19 in our text book, which was included on the back of the hardcopy newsletter. To read page 19 in our textbook, click here.

JEWISH STUDIES

This week, we focused on the Jewish value of S’mirat ha-Teva (“guarding the environment”) and how the ideas of preservation of land and reducing waste reach back to the Torah and Talmud. While the words “S’mirat ha-Teva come from an Israeli organization dedicated to guarding the newly formed country’s open spaces, protecting its coasts and beaches and promoting sustainable development to protect natural resources for generations, the true meaning of this week’s Jewish value is to protect the environment not only for Israel but all over the world. We read about David Ben-Gurion (Israel’s first prime minister) and his passion for making the Negev Desert bloom. The challenge of working with the difficult terrain of the Negev has led to many scientific advancements by Israeli scientists. We read a story about a tired, hungry, thirsty man who came upon a tree and then acted out our own renditions. We started to run out of time as we began to learn about Kibbutz Lotan and how that community is committed to living a green lifestyle and teach others to do so as well. Click here to read this week's chapter (it begins on page 11).

JEWISH STUDIES HOMEWORK (due Tuesday, October 19):

To prepare for next week’s chapter on Shmirat ha-guf (“guarding the body”), each student should complete the activity on the reverse of the hardcopy newsletter and be ready to discuss your answers. If you have misplaced your newsletter from this week (or missed class), a copy of the homework can be found on the right of this blog.

HEBREW – B’nei Mitzvah Skills
This week, we continued our study of the Blessing Before the Haftarah. Mastering this short, but tricky, blessing will be a huge accomplishment on our B'nei Mitzvah checklist. Cantor Schloss joined us for our weekly Trope Game Show and continued to teach us the skills we will need to chant Torah.

JEWISH STUDIES

This week, we focused on the first chapter in our textbook Eizehu Gibor: Living Jewish Values. This chapter teaches us that Tikkun Olam (“fixing the world”) is our responsibility as Jews. We read about Darfur and how Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis and Janice Kamenir-Reznik’s (our two Jewish heroes of the week) creation of Jewish World Watch is helping to mobilize the Jewish community to help. We also learned about the Solar Cooker Project and how we can not only read about Darfur, but really make a difference. We finished class this week by discussion which acts on page 10 of our textbook are Tikkun Olam and which are just good deeds. Students prepared for this by completing their homework from last week.

JEWISH STUDIES HOMEWORK (due Tuesday, October 12):
To prepare for next week's chapter on Shmirat ha-Teva ("guarding the environment"), each student should complete the activity on the reverse of the newsletter that went home in the blue folders this week. If you misplaced your newsletter/homework assignment, please answer the following question on a sheet of paper and bring it with you to school on Tuesday, October 12:

Please make a list of 10 things that people can do in their own homes to make a big impact on the environment. Of those 10, please circle 5 that you and your family can start doing right now…then do them!

Interested in reading what the students read in class this week? Click here to access our textbook. This week, our class focused on pages 5 - 10. Be sure to ask your child about the JWW's Solar Cooker Project! Flyers were sent home for anyone who is interested in donating to this cause.

Welcome to grade 6 at the ARS! I encourage you and your family to read our weekly newsletter and class blog (please bookmark this site and check it every week: http://katemonge6thgrade.blogspot.com). These are great ways to keep up to date on assignments and important reminders about our school and synagogue. By knowing what’s going on in our classroom, it gives your family the opportunity to discuss the same topics we cover in class to reinforce the learning and add your own family’s twist on the subject matter.

I look forward to spending the year learning and laughing with each of you. If you need to contact me with any questions or concerns, please send a message to my new email address:
monge.kate@gmail.com.

JEWISH STUDIES
Last week, we dove into our text book, Eizehu Gibor: Living Jewish Values. The fall semester’s Jewish Heroes curriculum helps the students to internalize Jewish values and gets them to “stick” by putting a face to abstract concepts and connects students to their proud heritage. We started in the middle of the book with the chapter on T’shuvah (a fitting topic for this time of year). T’shuvah comes from the Hebrew word shuv, which means “to turn.” T’shuvah is usually translated as “repent” but more accurately means to get back on the path toward becoming the best that you can become. We read about Rabbi Mark Borovitz, a recovered alcoholic and rabbi at a halfway house for Jews in recovery.

This week, we continued our study of t'shuvah by reading about Pope John Paul II. While the Pope isn't necessarily a Jewish hero, we learned that his biography includes a story that is important to Jews. We also completed an activity called "Missing the Mark."

JEWISH STUDIES HOMEWORK (due Tuesday, October 5):
To prepare for next week's chapter on Tikkun Olam, each student should completed the activity that was included on the reverse of the hardcopy newsletter and be ready to discuss and defend your choices.
Click here to read the assigned page of homework (page 10 in our textbook). This link will also take you to our whole textbook so feel free to scroll down and see what else we have read so far in our book (pages 59 - 64).

HEBREW – B’nei Mitzvah Skills

Last week, the grade 6 students took a "field trip" to the sanctuary bimah to imagine what it will feel like when they each take their place behind the Torah table and lead the congregation. We continued to refresh our memories on Hebrew reading as we flipped through the Torah service in our siddurim (prayerbooks) to see exactly what we have on our plates this year.

This week, we began studying the Blessing Before the Haftarah and had our first Trope (cantillation) lesson from Cantor Schloss.

HEBREW HOMEWORK:

Each week, students must practice reading Hebrew at least 5 minutes every night. Each student must complete and turn in a Reading Raffle Card to prove that they completed their Hebrew Practice. A purple Reading Raffle Card was included in each student's blue folder for this week. Please be sure that the blue folder is brought to school every Tuesday! For Hebrew practice this week, students should practice reading the first section of the Blessing Before the Haftarah (included in the blue folder). The Hebrew text also includes transliteration for parents that can't read Hebrew so they can still help their child self-correct. Students should always practice from the Hebrew side of the page.

REMINDERS:

  • Simchat Torah and Consecration: Join us as we honor our youngest students, as well as new members of the ARS community. Simchat Torah is the holiday when we unroll the entire Torah scroll and start back over at the beginning. We'll dance in the streets with all the TOS Torahs and hear lively klezmer music. The service begins in the sanctuary at 6PM.
  • Tot Shabbat: The first Tot Shabbat of the year is this Friday (families with children age 6 and younger). Beginning at 5:45pm with a community dinner to follow.
  • Shabbat Rishon: This Friday at 7:30pm. Come hear from Allan Rogers, Executive Director of Massachusetts Law Reform Institute and MAZON grant recipient. Hear about our new congregational focus on Hunger and Homelessness as we get ready for Mitzvah Day 2010.
  • Shabbat B'yahad - required for all students in Kindergarten - Grade 7. Shabbat B'yachad is a chance for the entire family to experience Shabbat. Our first monthly gathering is THIS Saturday, October 2 beginning at 9:15am. Drop in when you can (feel free to show up in your soccer uniform!) to take part in a variety of activities for all ages. Be sure to check out Shari's email entitled "From the Desk of Shari Churwin" that was sent on Tuesday for much more information!

As always, visit www.ohabei.org for more details and to see what else is going on at Temple Ohabei Shalom.
